Join us in writing to manufacturers who still haven’t changed to plastic-free packaging:

Cofresh lentil and hummus chips

Ecover

Ecover (UK) Ltd: 1 Eton Street, Richmond, Surrey, TW9 1AG

Email: hello@ecover.com

We want Ecover to use an environmentally friendlier refill system: the 15 litre polythene bags used in their refill boxes for refill stations (as well as the bag’s caps), are not recyclable!
Also, ask them what progress has been made on the caps of all their products - to be totally made from recycled plastic and to be recyclable; and wrapped plastics used on dishwasher & laundry tablets – are they biodegradable yet?

And while you’re at it…

Super markets

Have you thought about writing to the head offices of UK Supermarkets to ask the Directors what they are doing to put pressure on all manufacturers to find alternatives to plastic packaging including the plastic used to wrap cases of goods for handling on pallets and from warehouse to shopfloor.

The supermarkets generally have enormous influence over their suppliers, and have often dictated types of packaging used on things like fresh produce. They bear responsibility for a fair portion of the plastic waste situation we find ourselves in, and could use their influence to make a positive difference by investigating and supporting new technologies that can be used by their suppliers to eliminate or massively reduce the use of plastic.

This includes looking at their own systems for handling, storing and selling fresh produce in all their stores as soon as possible, at least before 2022.

County Councils

In the UK, items bought in poly bags (clear soft plastic bags), and items (including food) that have a plastic-based wrapper have to be labelled as 'Not Yet Recycled’, as there is not yet the kerbside/collection and reprocessing infrastructure to support it (currently only carrier bags have a significant collection infrastructure).
Write and ask your council, and your MP, when will the kerbside recycling of more plastic waste improve.
